Patty Waters - Patty Waters Sings

1966 | Vocal Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz

I played this at a dinner party once; it started out with light, cheerful conversation - talks about the state of our lives, recent endeavors, hobbies, music (with one guest complimenting the music selection for the night, noting how they loved Patty Waters' soothing voice), schedules, politics, work... it goes on. As I got up to flip the record to the b-side though, the energy shifted. Underlying tensions from the previously friendly banter came forward, and laughed-off disagreements became confrontational accusations. As I dropped the needle, one person started yelling, and the candles on the dining room table flared, coating the ceiling with a tangible, thick layer of black smoke (the guests didn't seem to notice though, as their attention was focused on the tension between themselves). I tried to calm everyone, but to no avail. After a few minutes of the situation only escalating, the power flickered - this flicker shorted the turntable, stopping the music, yet instantly returning the energy of the room to the light, cheerful conversation of before: this time covering topics such as food (with a focus on the meal itself - one couple joked about how the chicken was a little dry for their liking), pop culture, music (with one guest complimenting the music selection for the night; Patty Waters was never brought up, though), technology, media... it goes on. The only difference now was that there was no music to accompany the lighthearted discussion, but no one seemed to mind.

I've mentioned the night to a few people who were there in passing, but no one appears to remember anything about it, or anything about Patty Waters for that matter.
