Jurg Frey - Weites Land, Tiefe Zeit: Räume 1 - 8

2010 | Reductionism

This is about as reduced as reductionism gets.

Eight unbelievably quiet "textures" that slowly progress throughout the length of each 40 minute piece without straying from the original idea too much. Listening without amplifying the audio in any way makes the music embezzle itself into your mind - it's only when a slight detail is added/taken away that you realize the music is still playing, and it's not the hum of the ambient background noise that surrounds you. Whether or not this decision to make the music so quiet is a good one is up for debate, but it makes for a really interesting sonic experience if you have the patience to sit through each piece.

It definitely drags a little, as it lasts for over 5 hours, but the overall sentiment of the music is really interesting I think. Probably just an example of the idea being cooler than the execution though.
